Situation:
Samsung was introducing a new flat panel plasma television. These digital wide screen television sets provide 42 and 50-inch screens but are les than four inches in depth. The equipment is expensive and delicate, requiring the utmost care in shipping and handling to get it to various retailers nationwide. In addition, the product has a demanding shipping schedule because it arrives from overseas at the end of the month and then must be quickly shipped to retailers.
Strategy:
Samsung contracted with Technical Transportation to handle shipping the product to national retailers. TechTrans offered a nationwide network of skilled, professional carriers and air-ride trucks to handle the shipments. Because of its network and automated services, TechTrans can handle the demanding shipping schedule and quick turn around times.
Because Samsung requires that its retail partners can provide installation, this was not a pre-requisite for the logistics company. For Samsung, however, the knowledge that TechTrans can also take care of installation though its strategic partner, Digitron Communications Inc. Digitron's national network of 12,000 skilled field engineers are available for Samsung, when and where they are needed.
Results:
The program has been a success. As consumer acceptance continues to grow, the number of shipments has increased. TechTrans ships more than 500 units a month and the product is arriving on time and in good condition. TechTrans' flexibility allows it to meet the growing demand and varied shipping schedules to deliver the product throughout the country.
